IFTA, or International Fuel Tax Agreement, is an agreement between 48 contiguous US states and 10 Canadian provinces, making travel through different states and provinces easier with one single fuel license. If you have a truck with 2 or more axles exceeding 26,000 pounds, you must have an IFTA license. The report is due at the end of each month following after the end of each quarter.

If you have a truck with 2 or more axles exceeding 26,000 pounds, you must have an IFTA license. The report is due at the end of each month following after the end of each quarter. The Q4 2020 report is due on January 31, 2021.

To file, you’ll need your business details, IFTA details (account number), vehicle details, and mileage and fuel purchase details. Having all this information is just the beginning. Each state has tax rates and fuel surcharge rates that rarely match other jurisdictions. Inexperienced filers can get confused very quickly due to all the complexities. You can end up paying more than you owe if you file incorrectly.
